BIRD WATCHERS' PARADISE
Applegarth is dotted with benches. Watch Knysna Louries swooping along, Cape Parrots flying high, the Drongo hunting bees, a Jackal Buzzard high above, the Hadeda settling for the night, Hoopoes, Hornbills and a host of other birds!
BERRY FESTIVAL
Berries grow abundantly in Hogsback. Pick your own Blackberries from the brambles on the hill sides from January onwards. Look out for the more rare wild growing Black Raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) – it makes the most delicious jam. Contact us for an equally delicious Blackberry Jelly Recipe!
APPLEGARTH MUSHROOM GARDEN
From October to June a wide variety of mushrooms can be seen in the Applegarth Mushroom Garden. Mushroom Day is on 12 October! Pick your own wild mushrooms in the Hogsback forests!
Edible varieties of mushrooms in Hogsback include the prized Cep, the Cape Russula, Pine Rings and the prolific Blusher. Admire the spotted bright red coat of the (poisonous) Fly Agaric!
APPLEGARTH NURSERY
The Applegarth Nursery is known in particular for its collection of rare and unusual temperate garden plants not found easily in South African nurseries. APPLEGARTH GARDENS
The Applegarth Gardens, extending over more than three hectares, were established in the early 1940’s by Herbert Wilson, the founder of the Wilson-Rountree chocolate and sweet factory (now Nestlé) in East London. Epitomising the beauty of Hogsback, they have matured into one of the finest temperate climate gardens in South Africa, admired by the many visitors from here and abroad who come to enjoy the beautiful and stimulating environment.
